A Level

Two year A Level programme - 6 terms

At SSC, we enable students to experience the intellectual challenge and stimulation of studying subjects in much greater depth. Achieving good A Level results will ensure you get to choose from the UK’s most prestigious universities.

The A Level system works best when students have a wide range of subjects to choose from. SSC has a selection of subjects which can be taken in any combination and tailored to fit the student’s individual needs.

The added value of our programme is that in addition to the extensive academic support we provide in English and your chosen A Level subjects, your knowledge is further enhanced by a comprehensive and engaging enrichment programme.

Swansea Sixth form College is a registered exam centre for AQA, Edexcel and WJEC.

Entry requirements

Entry at 16+ is based on GCSE predictions, a school or college reference or report, and an interview with the Academic Manager.

  • Academic entry requirements: A minimum of 6 GCSE/iGCSE passes (or equivalent qualifications) at grade A*-C, with A*- C grades in Maths and English and the subjects chosen for A Level (where possible), and evidence of a good secondary or high school education.
  • For students from outside the UK: Students may be asked to take an assessment in English and/or Mathematics to satisfy our requirements.
  • An academic reference from your school is also required.
  • English Language entry requirements: IELTS 5.5 / Trinity ISE III or GCSE/iGCSE English language Grade A*- C.
  • English Language qualifications for university. Most universities require an IELTS score of 6.0 for degree entry. Below this level or without a GCSE English language qualification, you must follow our Trinity preparation course alongside your A Level studies.
  • Assessment: Examinations are taken in May/June.
  • Consideration will be given to exceptionally able and mature students whose families wish them to join a class higher than their age. The college will also consider, in discussion with families and agents, students who for reasons of competence in the English language or other specific difficulties might be happier or more successful in a year group where they are older than their peers.
  • AS refers to first year of A Level studies.
  • A2 refers to the second year of the A level studies.
  • A Level refers to the full 2 years of the A level Studies.
